Lyndon’s seating collections extend a warm reception

Lyndon’s seating collections extend a warm reception

Whether welcoming visitors to the office, or making guests feel at home upon arrival at a hotel, Lyndon’s extensive range of handcrafted seating collections offers the perfect solution to make the right first-time impression in any reception area.

Several classic and elegant collections provide designers and specifiers with significant freedom to create infinite seating arrangements that are able to meet the needs of today’s softer and more relaxed open-plan reception areas, without sacrificing functional requirements.

The truly inviting and relaxing comfort offered by Lyndon’s Sebastian, Olivia, Imogen and Lexe collections continue to make the traditional sofa and lounge chair option a popular specification throughout hotel, hospitality and corporate foyers. Featuring superior timber detailing, combined with a choice of luxury fabrics and leathers, these seating options are more than capable of providing a striking centerpiece in their own right.

Traditional wing chairs, such as the stately Mr & Mrs, are another popular choice throughout many hotel and hospitality lobbies, bringing a stunning fireside charm and allure to both traditional and contemporary interiors. Equally, the timeless appeal of Lyndon’s popular lounge chair collections such as Vernon, Albany, and Callisto, provide a warm welcome by drawing the sitter into luxurious and reassuring comfort.

Lyndon’s high-backed meeting collections that are perfect for breaking up large, open plan spaces and holding informal business meetings have long been specified in corporate foyers. However, as hospitality venues increasingly look to fulfill the needs of their corporate guests, Lyndon’s Entente and Arthur CityScape collections are now a common sight throughout hotel and hospitality lobbies too.

The versatility of Lyndon’s modular seating collections makes them no stranger to the reception. Boasting flexible and reconfigurable options, these popular collections offer endless design permutations. Whilst some, such as Us, present limitless possibilities for straight and curved configuration, others, such as Imogen, offer more traditional options of sofas, corner units and footstools.

Tim Armitt, Managing Director at Lyndon Design comments: “The reception will always be the first point of contact for visitors, and quite possibly their first exposure to a company’s brand. Hence, it’s vital that it leaves a positive impression.

“In addition to providing a wealth of aesthetic choice, our seating collections also deliver high levels of flexibility and practicality that are essential for high-traffic reception areas. Get the seating right, and visitors will not only be able to use the reception or foyer to rest and wait, they will be invited to stay longer and participate in so much more.”

Boss Design Scoops Mixology North Award For Revolutionary Task Chair

Boss Design Scoops Mixology North Award For Revolutionary Task Chair

Boss Design has beat off strong competition at the Mixology North Awards 2015 to scoop first place in the Furniture Product of the Year category for its revolutionary Coza task chair.

Following a record amount of entries across all categories for this year’s event, which represents the North’s esteemed award ceremony and winter ball for the interior design community, the judges were ultimately won over by Coza’s pioneering design that has taken the UK commercial furniture market by storm.

Commenting on this latest accolade, Founder and Chairman of The Boss Design Group, Brian Murray says: “We are delighted to have scooped this prestigious award. Coza is an engineering triumph and shatters the market’s preconceived expectations about what a task chair should be. It is designed for flexibility and ease of use, offering comprehensive support through fluid movement, and unlike other task chairs, it does not require multiple components or complex assembly.”

Brian adds: “The Boss Design brand is revered worldwide for its leading-edge design and handcrafted manufacturing expertise, and this latest award is testament to our reputation for quality and innovation. Alongside the Best of NeoCon Silver Award achieved at this year’s NeoCon in the USA, we are confident that Coza will change the face of task seating across the globe.”

Created in collaboration with renowned German furniture designer, Martin Ballendat of Design Ballendat, Coza is a task chair that boasts extraordinary comfort and dynamic support by using the natural flexibility of a single ribbon of material. Combining a pivot point and flexible Polymer shell to mimic a traditional 2:1 synchronised mechanism, Coza delivers improved levels of support, without the need for user adjustment. As well as facilitating flexible working practices, it meets the demand for more sophisticated meeting chairs to accommodate longer meetings.

New Qube Office Pod System Offers Simplified Intelligence

New Qube Office Pod System Offers Simplified Intelligence

The creation of flexible meeting and working spaces within the office is now made simple thanks to the new Qube freestanding pod system from Unifi, part of the Boss Design Group. Providing specifiers with endless scope for design, the introduction of Qube follows the phenomenal success of the brand’s earlier acoustic pod system, Vista.

Presenting a contemporary and flexible alternative to fixed partitioning, Qube offers a simplified range of options to enable specifiers to easily design and control office space to suit corporate working patterns and enhance wellbeing. Bespoke options with unlimited design, size and branding possibilities are also available.

Whilst the Solo pod offers space for private phone calls or an escape from a busy environment, the Duo two-person pod is ideal for ad hoc face-to-face meetings. Meanwhile, the Qube modular systems feature three options: Qube 3 seats up to four people and is available in four sizes ranging from 3x3m to 6x3m, whilst the larger Qube 4 system accommodates up to six people and comes in three sizes ranging from 4x4m to 6x4m. A circular option, Qube 360 with a capacity of four, also features in this exciting range.

All Qube pods boast an impressive noise suppression rating of up to 34dB, which serves to provide an advanced acoustic solution with exceptional speech privacy. To suit individual preference, Qube offers a choice of fabric and glass panels, and writeable glass and all over manifestations.

The modular construction of Qube means it can be assembled in 2-3 hours, subject to size, and it is easy to re-size or re-locate to another part of a building. Its freestanding design avoids the need to fix to the fabric of the building.

Commenting on this latest launch, Phil Duggan, Director of Unifi says: “Through simple intelligence, Qube provides endless scope for designers and specifiers, whilst enabling them to support and promote flexible and nomadic working patterns. As well as being aesthetically pleasing, Qube boasts the quality components and engineering, that are synonymous with the Unifi and Boss Design brands.”

Qube comes as standard with LED lighting, PIR motion sensors to activate lights and fan, glazed and upholstered panels, acoustic ceiling tiles, together with sliding door. All models are DDA compliant.

Cega's Take Centre Court at Tennis At The Palace

Cega's Take Centre Court at Tennis At The Palace

Presented by Fortnum & Mason ‘Tennis at the Palace’ was held at the Emirates Palace, Abu Dhabi this year. Amidst the grounds of the 7 star luxury hotel was a British Garden Party theme.

Guests enjoyed grass court tennis played by some of the Legends of the game, including Tim Henman, Pat Cash, Richard Krajicek and trick shot specialist Mansour Bahrami. Wimbledon Ladies' Champions Marion Bartoli and Jana Novotna played as well in an exclusive all female evening.

The quintessentially British garden tennis theme had an added twist from Boss Design Group's Soft Office Collection, as four Cega's took to centre court.

Chris Gilbert, CEO of Gemaco, gives an insight as to why they chose Cega, “we chose the Cega due to its uniqueness & eye catchy factor. The eye-catching colors of the fabric complimented Wimbledon.”

With the Cega being an innovative personal high back seating solution it meant that the players could enjoy in between matches its advanced acoustic qualities. Its contoured design gave spectators something to focus on and talk about.

Having the Cega's situated outdoors amongst a back drop of palm trees and the grandeur of the Emirates Palace reminds us once again that their individual look can compliment and modernize any setting.

The Influence of Technology on Soft Office Furniture Design

The Influence of Technology on Soft Office Furniture Design

With the growing popularity of soft office furniture in the workplace our Design Director, Mark Barrell, takes a look at the advances in technology that are becoming pivotal to furniture designs.

The term ‘high tech’ in the office might conjure up a vision of exposed cables and cold metal furniture, but much has changed over the last few years and technology now serves to make a space more inviting, comfortable and productive.

Today, companies list flexibility as one of the top five criteria when choosing furniture. We have already seen how increased functionality has resulted from arranging workspaces via Wi-Fi instead of wires and raised flooring. Even computers themselves are gaining flexibility. The emergence of affordable flat-screen monitors has made it much easier to incorporate computer displays in a variety of places – from an office divider to the wall of a flexible meeting system or acoustic office pod.

As we move towards flexible work environments, we have to provide more flexible products. As the reliance upon mobile electronic devices increases, so too does the need for keeping mobiles, laptops and tablet devices charged. Hence, it is now commonplace to find charging points incorporated into upholstered seating panels as well as desks.

At The Boss Design Group, many of our upholstered seating products with broad arm areas already incorporate such technology – Layla by Boss Design and Raft by Komac being two such examples that can frequently be seen gracing breakout areas, foyers and public areas. The integration of such technology is clean and seamless and it aesthetically coordinates with each piece.

Today, as there is a greater emphasis on teams and groups and a lesser emphasis on individuals, the traditional workspace is moving away from fixed desk ratios. Furthermore, this collaboration must be able to take place anywhere. Hence, the success of collaborative work stations such as Cocoon by Boss Design and Entente by Lyndon Design. As well as providing innovative meeting areas that effectively break up large, open plan office spaces, they offer exceptional seating and technology combined into one striking piece.

Power and data units are available across a range of products, which includes power sockets and USB ports. An LED screen can also be integrated for the ultimate meeting space usability, thereby enabling mobile, nomadic workers who need instant power and internet connectivity to work away from the desk.

Going forwards, the challenge for furniture designers is to manage increasingly complex technology and facilitate a seamless integration into their designs. However, whilst technology should support the environment, it shouldn’t be a key visual feature of the environment. Instead, it is the convergence of architecture, furniture and technology that will be vital to successfully meeting changing business needs and encouraging effective workspaces in the future.

Privacy without walls

Privacy without walls

As office spaces continue to evolve, Philip Duggan, Director at The Boss Design Group, considers the growing popularity of office pod systems that help create privacy without walls

As the evolution in office furniture and design continues, distinct trends are emerging that channel improved communication and collaboration. Open plan offices lined with cubicles, desks and computers are becoming a thing of the past, whilst less formal environments that incorporate break-out spaces, idea walls, chill-out zones, phone booths and touchdown space - to name but a few - continue to gain ground.

Agile or flexible working takes on the view that work is wherever you go, and this translates into a wider range of locations and settings within the office from which to get the job done. In this holistic approach to office design, some of the real heroes of today’s new office designs are flexible meeting systems, or acoustic office pods as they are commonly known.

Essentially, office pods are designed to give the user a sense of their own private space in the workplace and combined with high acoustic performance, they are ideal for modern offices where personal touchdown spaces and informal collaborative areas are the norm.

Acoustically engineered and fully modular, these pods also offer the ultimate in flexibility. Avoiding the need for planning permission and dilapidation, they can literally be sited almost anywhere in the office. Self-supporting and non floor-fixed, they can also be fully deconstructed and relocated to other parts of the office, if required.

As with all emerging trends, the degree of product sophistication matures over time and the same is true of office pods, with LED lighting, PIR motion sensors to reduce the amount of energy consumed when vacated, and high performance acoustic ceiling panels for enhanced sound insulation, often coming as standard. With options to specify accompanying audio visual screen brackets, through to power and data capability and other technological needs, the Vista pod uses a combination of manifestations and customised graphics, and an extensive palette of fabrics, to offer a truly bespoke solution.

Of course, there will always be the need for traditional boardrooms and meeting rooms within the office arena, however the emergence of office pods now offers interior designers the option to sustain the collaborative work movement and to create rooms within rooms - and all without the need for walls.

Peek at 100% Design

Peek at 100% Design

The 20th edition of 100% Design promised us a mood that was both celebratory and firmly fixed on the future.  Happily for the team at Boss Design this fitted perfectly with our own mindset and optimistic outlook. Designing new, exciting products that enhance the workplace, and consequently lift the mood of the workforce, is what drives us and in turn makes our own spirits soar.  Drawing, designing and developing is at the heart of our business but the tingle of excitement really starts when a product leaves our headquarters and makes its first foray into the big wide world.

Bustling with industry enthusiasts, architects and specifiers, the 100% Design stage was the ideal platform to proudly show our latest soft office offering – the playfully titled Peek and Boo.

Open plan working can inevitably result in interruptions and lack of privacy.  There are moments when we all need to escape to a place where we can close off disturbance and open our minds. Peek rises to the challenge – a high back, swivelling single seat that works to create a comfortable, private haven to work, think or relax. Boo is Peeks low back, smaller sibling and sits alongside it to create cool, flexible settings suitable for a whole multitude of tasks.

As Sam Pettersen, an internal designer at Boss and lead designer on this project put it:

'Boss have a reputation for creating stand out pieces and proven record of innovative design. We always have to remain true to the Boss Design ethos and create pieces that sit alongside the existing range, but with Peek and Boo we were also answering a need in the market. It’s a new way of thinking rather than just another chair.’

The plethora of drawings that Sam produced bear testament to the enormous creative effort involved in designing new pieces. Ideas were discussed, re-worked and refined and the team spent 10 energetic months prototyping. Market feedback, price point and logistics have all played their part in influencing the finished product that was so positively received by the market last week. Visitors to our stand sat, swivelled, swooned, smiled and left us with a feeling of time very well spent.

We’ve returned to headquarters in a celebratory mood - our highly skilled workforce are fired up and ready to fulfil the orders.  A sneak peek into our design department proves that they’re all hard at work on their latest inspirations.

The World Cup - Are you sitting comfortably?

The World Cup - Are you sitting comfortably?

Has the BBC World Cup coverage had you jumping for joy or have you felt more like hiding behind the sofa? Watching football can be a very emotional experience. Maybe that’s why, from the millions of options available, the BBC chose to, once again, seat their pundits on our Kruze chairs.

When you’re going to be tied to your chair for the duration of the tournament your body needs supporting through the highs and the lows. If the pundits are fidgeting in their seats it will be a result of the action on the pitch and not because they can’t get comfortable. When an artful goal or excruciating near miss makes them jump, Kruze’s gently sculpted contours and generous proportions will catch them when they fall.

Add to that the presence, panache and contemporary cool of Kruze and it’s obviously the pundit’s perfect fit. Sleek, smooth and stylish and with its fair share of TV appearances it’s fast becoming a modern icon.

Of course the BBC are broadcasting to the world so when they’re looking for a chair with the right level of quality and kudos it’s only fitting that they look to Boss for great British engineering and design. Their choice of Andrew Muirhead Ingleston ‘Anthracite’ leather adds to the Kruze’s air of authority; helpful when you need to get your point across and impose your personality on a highly charged situation.

This World Cup the Kruze chair is playing an important part; keeping the pundits comfortable and confident even when they’re on the edge of their seats. England may be out of the World Cup but Kruze will be flying the British flag right up to the final.

Collaborative Working

Collaborative Working

You may have noticed that here at Boss Design we’ve got more than a passing interest in the issues around#collaborative working. We design products that provide you with options to get the most out of your space. #Quietcorners to share, think and reach your true potential. Of course in order to do that we do a fair bit of thinking and sharing ourselves.

We sometimes work with friends, and as is only natural, we choose friends that have the same basic values and ethos as ourselves. Innovative companies that have#sustainability at the heart of their design philosophy and who care as deeply as we do about leaving a positive legacy for future generations. Anything less just wouldn’t do.

High on our company friendship list is +Camira Fabrics who design and manufacture the most innovative, adventurous, environmentally sensitive fabrics in the world. Their product offering include bast fibre ranges such as Hemp and Sting, 100% recycled polyester products and 100% rapidly renewable wool fabrics, all manufactured to international standards ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001.

We’re delighted to say that we’ve chosen @Camira fabrics to enhance both the physical and acoustic comfort of a number of our products.

Cocoon is one example, a beautifully simple unit that combines the sit and posture of a traditional desk and task seat with the comfort and feel of a sofa. The hoop like structure is upholstered inside and out with Camira Blazer Hourglass fabric, a quilted version of their traceable 100% Laneve wool Blazer fabric. Foam backing and wadding forms the density of the quilt whilst the organic, curved stitch detail creates the soft contours. We think you’ll agree that it does more than just look good. Whether it’s a team meeting, a collaborative task or a base for the day, Cocoon provides the comfort you need.

Our range of #Unifi glass office pods feature acoustic panels in upholstered #Camira Lucia fabric. Lucia is a 100% recycled polyester panel fabric achieving EU Ecolabel status. The wide choice of colours means you won’t have trouble matching your interior scheme and the improved acoustics mean that you won’t have trouble keeping calm. After all, the happiest workplaces are those where friendships flourish and collaborative working bring mutual benefits.

Volkswagen Group Specify Unifi Vista Pods

Volkswagen Group Specify Unifi Vista Pods

Several areas within the Volkswagen Group Headquarters needed to be refurbished, most importantly the old Audi showroom which had been converted into a new breakout / meeting area. VW had already created a few formal meeting rooms along the perimeter and were keen to use the rest of the space for an informal meetings and hot desking area.

Our meeting pod system, Vista, was the ideal solution for the large space.

Two VISTA 2 and Two VISTA 3 pods were installed. The acoustic qualities of the Vista pods allowed private meetings to take place with minimal disruption from outside noise.

Distraction

Distraction

Are you easily distracted in an #openplan office, desperate for a quiet corner to call your own? You’re not alone. Most workers agree that effective working goes out of the window as unwanted noise comes knocking on their virtual door.

According to #JulianTreasure, a leading sound and communication
expert, people have the bandwidth to process 1.6 conversations at any one time. So if a colleague is sharing their opinion on the latest office drama, it leaves you little capacity for the task in hand.
Here at #Unifi we’ve understood all the issues and addressed them with Vista, our range of sleek, customisable, office pods. To ensure the wellbeing of their staff, companies need to provide meeting rooms and environments for the private conversations and lively discussions that are an inevitable part of business life.

Quiet corners where staff can escape to tackle the most demanding cognitive tasks and listen to the conversations inside their head are a must for truly effective working. You can be confident that with a Unifi office pod you’re in control; glass panels provide the highest of decibel privacy ratings, you can choose the position of the lighting and there’s built in compatibility with your technology. When we say you can relax and get on with the task in hand, we really mean it.

We’re pleased to be able to point out that the air-flow system that is used in our Vista pods has received the Quiet Mark Award from the Noise Abatement Society. 380 cubic metres of air per hour circulates through the air flow system. This reduces the CO2 levels enhancing your ability to stay alert, concentrate and take a nice deep breath or maybe give a sigh of relief. . .

Some companies may offer the option of acrylic panels but we believe that’s false economy. Glass is more durable and will accept branding without a single scratch in sight. We design pods that last, pods that have the flexibility to evolve and re-configure with your business.
These days, companies have to work hard to both recruit and retain the best staff. Unifi pods give you a helping hand, allowing you to create spaces that encourage brighter thinking and give your staff a sense of both calm and control.

Flexibility and the ability to evolve with the changing business landscape

Flexibility and the ability to evolve with the changing business landscape

On a scale of 1 to 10 - how flexible are you?
If you can touch your toes - give yourself a 5.  If you can bend over backwards - give yourself a pat on the back whilst you’re there.  Of course you can’t give yourself full marks for flexibility unless your mind is flexible too.  Chances are the results of that are somewhat influenced by your work environment.

At the Boss Design Group we understand that - in the same way that rigid chairs can make our backs stiffen, spending half our lives in a workspace that doesn’t evolve with our changing needs can make our minds seize up.  Open plan working may have given us more elbow space but unfortunately, lack of quiet corners can often lead to less brain space too.

Companies need to think strategically about creating workspaces that help enhance the wellbeing and build the confidence of their staff. Employees are the engine that keep a company moving and job satisfaction is closely linked to satisfaction with working environments. You’ve invested in your staff and investments need protecting. You’ll get an awful lot further with an engine that purrs than you will with one that clunks.

Drawing on our wealth of knowledge and expertise, we’ve flexed our creative muscles and have created some space enhancing solutions. Unifi - a range of pods that have true flexibility at their heart.

Nowadays the world changes at a rapid rate of knots. Not only is the workforce more and more diverse but business has to run to keep up with advancing technology and rising property prices.  Competition is intense and there’s not much room on the podium.  Unifi will help you respond rapidly and effectively to changes in your business landscape with the Vista office pod solution. Vista is easy to configure and re-configure, with adjustable lighting and a wealth of technology packages available. Like a highly honed athlete; Vista’s high quality frame may be ultra slim but it doesn’t compromise on strength and endurance.

Add to that our popular Made to Measure option and you could say that at Unifi we bend over backwards to help.

Choosing the flexibility of Unifi office pods keeps so many of your options open and makes perfect business sense. After all, everyone needs a quiet corner and no one can be certain of the shape of the future.

Does Hot-desking lead to hot tempers?

Does Hot-desking lead to hot tempers?

Are you territorial? If your desk is creaking under the weight of your trinkets and you like to park in exactly the same spot in the car park each day, the answer is probably yes. Spare a thought then for those office workers practising the nomadic art of hot-desking. The workers who clear their desks at the end of each shift not knowing where they’ll rest their laptop next.

Rising property prices mean that having an office that’s full of furniture but only half full of staff is not what any of us could call effective space utilisation. Space is expensive and we need to find the most effective ways to use it. If half of your workforce are out on the road for half of their time then it doesn’t always make financial sense to give them a permanent desk. Many will thrive in this situation but for others, never knowing who they’ll be sitting next to can have a negative impact on their wellbeing. Add to that constant interuptions from other workers random thoughts, or telephone calls, and some will feel like their personal headspace has been invaded.

At Unifi we’re aware that hot-desking can occasionally raise workers blood pressure. If just thinking about it is making you hot under the collar then you may need to find yourself a quiet corner and take some very deep breaths. We’d like to reassure you that Vista, our customisable range of acoustic office pods provide just the kind of calming space that allows you to take control and embrace flexible working.

We understand that even the biggest fans of hot desking could soon lose their cool if there’s nowhere to escape for a private conversation and no suitably discreet meeting environment to have a frank and open discussion with colleagues. To ensure effective working for all, open plan offices need meeting rooms and quiet corners for both contemplation and collaboration.

We’re pleased to say that our designers have been busy developing office solutions that provide just that. Unifi glass panel office pods give you the comfort of the highest acoustic decibel ratings, and the security of lockable doors, ensuring your privacy even in the busiest of workplaces. Add to that the undeniable quality of their construction, their excellent carbon footprint and the fact that they can be customised to suit your space, and we think you’ll agree that we’ve got all territories covered. With a Vista office pod, open plan working and hot-desking doesn’t need to lead to hot tempers.
